Most owners of Ferraris and Lamborghinis keep their prized possessions tucked away in a garage waiting for that rare day with perfect weather so that they can enjoy all of the sensations and sounds of their exotic car at speed on a windy country road.  The idea of using such a car as a daily driver would bring up several problems.  First off, putting high mileage on such a rare and collectible car would negatively affect the value, and forget about driving it in the rain or... gasp... snow!  Also, more mileage means more frequent maintenance which can be quite pricey.  Also these cars often are not the most reliable cars on the road, I mean they aren't exactly Hondas!

Which brings me to the reason that I am choosing the Acura NSX as one of Drivin' Ivan's Great Cars.  It has an exotic appearance, it is fast and fun to drive, and it is just as reliable as a Honda because it is a Honda!  Combining a mid-engine layout, a great in-house designed exterior, and great reliability truly makes the NSX a stand-alone choice in truly reliable and exotic transportation.

The Acura NSX was manufactured from 1990 thru 2005.  The NSX - T for Targa was introduced in 1995 but the open top added 100 lbs. to the overall weight of the car and made the car less rigid.  Many purists prefer hard tops for the added structural integrity which leads to less weight and better overall handling, but I think that any sports car is made more attractive, and a lot more fulfilling on a nice, spirited drive by popping the top.

The car was conceived as a Ferrari beater with a high revving V-6 and a red line of 8,000 rpm, in a mid-engine rear wheel drive configuration.  This lofty objective was met as the original NXS had a 0-60 time and top speed very near the Ferrari 348's at 5.0 seconds and 167 mph respectively.  It was available in manual or automatic transmission. Upon its release, the car was praised worldwide by the media for its excellent road handling and performance.  It also gets pretty good gas mileage for an exotic car, averaging up to 22 mpg on the highway.

If you are looking for a great exotic car that is easy to own and really quite a bargain than the Acura NSX is for you.  With prices starting at around $25,000 for a good first series car and owners regularly reporting over 100,000 carefree miles, it may just be one of the best all around sports car bargains available today.  It's the oxymoron of autos, a truly dependable exotic car, the Acura NSX.
