For all of you readers who enjoy the comfort and safety that your Subaru, Mercedes, Volvo, BMW, Toyota, or any other car with four wheel drive provides, you have but one car to thank. The Audi Quattro! Way back in 1980, Audi had the foresight and vision to fit their rally car with the Quattro all-wheel drive system and well... the rest is history.
They had so much success on the rally race circuit that from that moment on, every successful rally car had to have an all-wheel drive system to be competitive. Rally races are held in harsh environments including snow covered and dirt mountain roads where good traction is a must. One slip of the wheel and the driver and navigator could be sent into a tree, or even worse careening over a cliff!
As a Lancia owner, I've always been impressed with the great successful rally racing history that Lancia enjoyed thoughout the 1970's. The boton was passed to Audi in the early 1980's and then handed back to Lancia with the success of their later all-wheel drive rally racers like the Lancia Delta Integrale. Ford, Citroen, and Peugot have been recent leaders in the World Rally Championship all with all-wheel drive entries.
The original Audi Quattro was sold in the US from 1983 thru 1986, and they are prized by both enthusiasts and car collectors. Today the Quattro name still lives on in every Audi all-wheel drive model. Thanks to the Audi Quattro, all-wheel drive systems are now put to good use in cars ranging from your average grocery getting Subaru to the exotic Bugatti Veyron.
