Updating a story from last night, My9/WWOR has begun to cut on-air staff. Jennifer Jordan and Megan Vega are the latest to feel the recession directly, as they are being let go. A station official said the reporters and fill-in anchors are not having their contracts renewed. They will remain with the station through much of June.
These job cuts come to light as Channel 9 prepares for an overhaul of its news operations. Speculation is running rampant that a shift is coming to News Corp.-owned WWOR, possibly as soon as the new fiscal year—July 1.
That “shift,” according to the Daily News, could have WWOR trimming its 10 p.m. newscast to 30 minutes and starting it an hour later. In the process, Channel 9 would share even more resources with sister station Fox 5. The weekend newscasts would be scaled back or eliminated entirely.
Both Jordan and Vega grew up in the area. Jordan, who had previously worked at WCBS, grew up in Peekskill, N.Y. She has been with Channel 9 since 2006.
Vega, a Brooklyn native, grew up in New Jersey. Being laid off never comes at an opportune time, but for Vega, with the station since 2003, she’s in her 19th week carrying twins.
Meantime, Fox 5 ousted weathercaster Melissa McGee yesterday. She joined WNYW in 2008 following a stint at AccuWeather.
Mike Woods takes on McGee's duties until July 13. A station spokeswoman said, "At that time, we are adding a fifth hour of Good Day New York from 9-10 a.m. and there will no longer be a half-hour 11 a.m. newscast."
McGee’s layoff, effective immediately, combined with the My9 tumult, has meant even more work for veteran meteorologist Craig Allen. The Fox 5 weekend weather anchor, has been seen filling in this week for Nick Gregory. Allen told me viewers will get an extra dose of him, in for the vacationing Gregory weeknights. “I will be triple shifting many days this month and next.”
Allen is the longtime Chief Meteorologist at WCBS Radio as well.
