Recently the National Film Board of Canada, aka NFB, created a free iPhone app which collects many Film Board supported films and makes them available for free in a YouTube-like environment. However, unlike YouTube there are no time limits here and the application does stream features and many shorts.
When opening the app you are shown the most recent uploads. You can also see available films organized by channels (Short Films, Most Popular, Classics, Environment, Social Issues, History & War, Kids Cartoons, Animated Films, Documentaries, Trailers and Featured Films). You can also search by name, bookmark films for easy access and save for a later viewing (the app warns that this option is rather slow.)
It is a great library of film that opens up many rarely seen gems to the public and every film fan should download it and give it a shot. The highlight found so far is Cordell Barker's The Cat Came Back which was nominated for an Oscar and selected as One of the 50 Greatest Cartoons: As Selected by Animation Professionals in 1994.
This is a tremendous app that other National Film Boards and Archives should emulate. Listen up AFI.
