In the news, well erotica news, the publishers who have brought you Black Lace and Nexus erotica out of the UK have decided to stop producing erotica. Read full article here.
Both Black Lace and Nexus have produced great erotica for years and have pushed the envelope, especially Nexus as it is all about the fetishes.
This is a catch-22 situation. On one hand, one can see why Virgin, the publisher, would want to stop selling erotica in print books, as people can read it online for free. Yet on the other hand, the writers who write quality erotica and the readers who enjoy quality erotica are the big losers in this decision.
While I’ve reviewed free erotica online, a lot of what is written is by amateur writers, and while that is not a bad thing, that may not be the market for what a person who is willing to purchase books, such as Black Lace, are looking for. There is some good writing to be found, but one would have to scour through countless stories to get the quality that they’ve come to depend on.
In retrospect, this also maybe a good opportunity for another publishing house to pick up the slack so to speak on the authors of these books. Especially if one wanted to start in erotica, but was afraid to jump in. There is still a viable market for these books.
But on top of this news, is what will other publishers do who publish erotica? Will they also decide to stop publishing quality erotica because of the bottom line? At this point, Virgin has started something that may turn into something bigger or it maybe just a blip in the erotiverse, but one thing is clear: erotica is still being read, and people still want it.
