
In classic cinema news…
- Good news for classic film buffs in the Los Angeles area or those willing to travel, Turner Classic Movies has announced a classic film festival they will be hosting April 22-25. Together with Vanity Fair, they will screen 50 classic films and host celebrities in Q and A’s. Robert Osborne, TCM’s house host, will also be there, presenting the films. The festival will be held in various venues throughout the Los Angeles area, including such theaters as Grauman’s Chinese Theater and the Egyptian Theater. Though the full schedule has not yet been released, it’s almost guaranteed to be a good time.
- Other exciting news in the world of film festivals, The Berlin Film Festival has announced a special screening of the original cut of Fritz Lang’s classic silent sci-fi film, Metropolis. The original was thought to be gone forever, but the “lost” footage was recently discovered in a museum in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The film was originally released in 1927 to poor ratings. Since it was the most expensive film to be at the time in Germany, the production company UFA, re-edited it, cutting out 30 minutes and re-released it eight months later, this time to raving reviews. The Murnau Foundation has put the pieces of the puzzle back together and their efforts can be seen on February 10.
- An adaptation of Arabian Nights is now in the works with Chuck Russell signing on as director. The original film was made in 1942 and starred John Hall and Maria Montez. It earned four Academy Award nominations. The adaptation will be in 3D and, as of now, has a budget of $70 million dollars. It’s scheduled to start production in April of 2010.
- In casting news, it looks like they’ve found a new Eliza Doolittle. It’s rumored that Keira Knightly will play Audrey Hepburn’s famed character in the remake of My Fair Lady. Emma Thompson is adapting the script of the 1964 classic musical film.
- Warner Bros. has released a 50th anniversary edition of Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, starring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint. The special edition is available on Blu-Ray and DVD. If you don't own the film already, this one is always a good classic to pop in the DVD player.
