This week in classic cinema news….
-Though it’s still a rumor at this point, word is that Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey McGuire could very well be starring in the remake of The Third Man, originally directed by Carol Reed and released in 1949. Though it’s not clear yet who would be playing which roles, it will be interesting to see who fills the shoes of Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten. The film, based on a Graham Greene story, is about Holly Martins, a novelist who arrives in Vienna at the request of his friend Harry Lime only to discover that Lime has been killed in a car accident. The story doesn’t seem quite believable to Martins, so he sets out to reveal what really happened to his friend. Steven Knight, who penned Eastern Promises, will be taking on the challenge of reworking the screenplay. The particulars of the remake have not yet been revealed and the film is still in the early stages of production.
-More development has occurred on the Coen brothers remake of True Grit (1969). Jeff Bridges was already set to play the role of US marshal Rooster Cogburn and now it looks like he might have a couple of costars. Matt Damon and Josh Brolin are in talks to join the project. Damon would play the lawman, alongside Cogburn and Brolin would be playing the killer that they are after. If all goes to plan, the film will start shooting next March and be in line for a late 2010 release.
- A new trailer has been released for The Wolfman. The new film, set to be released February 2010, stars Anthony Hopkins and Benicio Del Toro filling the roles Claude Rains and Lon Chaney Jr. made so famous in the 1941 original.
