Have you spent the past two weeks wracking your brain trying to remember the locations of previous summer Olympics? I remember Athens, Sydney and Atlanta but past that things get kind of fuzzy.
To jog your memory -- and to get you started on your next list of places to visit -- here's a refresher and some fun things to do when you get there.
Athens, Greece - 2004
Of course if you're in Athens you've got to go to Olympia to see where it all started. Imagine what the games were like while you stand in the ancient Olympia Stadium and be sure to visit the
Archaeological Museum of Olympia for a comprehensive look at ancient Greece.
Sydney, Australia - 2000
From what I recall, the Sydney games were, simply put, cool in a way only Australia can deliver. You can continue that coolness by taking a
SegWay tour of Olympic Park. Not only will you roll through the grounds where sports history was made, but you'll get some amazing views of the city's business district, Harbour Bridge and Centrepoint Tower.
Atlanta, Georgia - 1996
Pay your respects to the victims of the Olympic bombing while it Atlanta by visiting the memorial Quilt of Remembrance in
Centennial Olympic Park. Also be on the lookout for granite from the five continents represented in the Olympic Games that was used in the Park's construction.
Barcelona, Spain - 1992
Get out of the city and row in the footsteps of Olympians by renting on the
Lake of Banyoles. With its world-famous rowing lake, Banyoles is a favorite for training and staging events.
Seoul, South Korea - 1988
Although the Olympics were over two decades ago, South Korea still carries a torch and the
Seoul Olympic Museum is a testament to the country's pride in their games. You've got to spend some time in the Sports Experience Hall where you can do just that!
Los Angeles, California - 1984
Windsurfing debuted as an Olympic sport for the first time in L.A.; what better way to pay tribute to the games than to try it yourself? Head to
Cabrillo Beach near the harbor for world-class windsurfing conditions.
Moscow, Russia - 1980
Despite the U.S. boycott of the 1980 games, I couldn't't leave Moscow off the list. But let's put politic aside and have you focus on the positive - Mischa, the games' mascot. Illustrator Viktor Chizhikov modeled Mischa after the beautiful brown bears that populate Russia. Visit the
Moscow Zoo for a glimpse of the real thing.
Montreal, Canada - 1976
Hand it to the Canadians to turn a unused Olympic arena into something educations and fun! The Velodrome, used for cycling during the Summer Games, into the
Biodome which houses exhibits of the world's most fascinating ecosystems.
