"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.
Live the life you've imagined."
Henry David Thoreau
Most of us have heard the overused expression, "High school is the best time of your life!" Often the speaker of this idle phrase adds "Enjoy it while it lasts!"
The truth is every person experiences the "best time" of his/her life at varying stages. People's experience and levels of happiness vary as much as their unique characteristics. As students begin college this fall they should do so without nostalgia for high school days gone by. Rather, looking ahead will allow every new college student to evolve into the next stage of life.
During college people make mistakes. Learning from one's mistakes in a supportive environment serves as one of the best aspects of the college experience. College students must break out of the mold they conformed to in order to gain admission to college. Every student should break the bonds of conformity and explore, embrace and experience all life offers.
Students should worry not about what they "should" be doing. Rather, use college to experiment. Each student will follow an individual path - some will attend parties, others will focus on making friends, some may drop-out and still others will strive to race through the experience and graduate early.
To paraphrase Thoreau, students must act with confidence and become what they have always dreamed. This is your chance, take it. Reach for the stars.
