Maya, a Road House worker, doesn't have to think long to decide which Bayview coffee shop is "best."

Not long ago, finding any coffee shop in Bayview was tough.  Now, there are many to choose from.  The "Best" depends on what you're looking for.

Best actual coffee?  That's easy.  Ritual Roasters, a coffee bar tucked away at Flora Grubb Nursery on Jerrold just west of Third Street.  Ask them about the gizmo they use to make a cup of joe.  Here's a hint: it costs as much as a new car.  Then enjoy what that gizmo produces, and be prepared to fidget for the next 24 hours.  Open 8 to 5 every day except Sunday (10 to 5) 1634 Jerrold Street.  415.624.1024

Best local scene?  It's right on Third Street.  Javalencia Cafe, brought to you by the same folks behind the cafe on Valencia in the Mission, is a spic-n-span new cafe with a penchant for art.  Art on the walls changes frequently, there are loads of yummy food items to choose from, and you couldn't find a friendlier bunch of folks behind any counter.  Just behind the cafe, check out Gallery 94124.  3900 Third at Evans.

Best traditional Bayview scene?  At the gates of the award-winning urban garden at Quesada Avenue and Third Street is Wendy's Cheesecake Bakery where the coffee is about what you drank before Starbuck's conquered the world.  You're sure to have at least one memorable conversation.  Family-owned.  415.822.4959

Best unexpected treat?  The Road House Cafe, run by the same family that owns the popular El Azteca Taqueria just across the street on Third and Williams, is a real treasure.  They close early, and mostly serve the working folks along the Third Street corridor.  But get there in the early afternoon, and you're likely to have the place to yourself.  Enjoy the large windows looking out at life on Third Street, and lthen ook up to see the charming Latona Community Garden just at the crest of the hill.  5191 Third Street

For more info: Each of the businesses described are anchor businesses that are making the Third Street Corridor a resurgent success.  Wendy's and Road House both survived the construction of the T Third light rail system which turned the corridor into a virtual ghost town.  All those associated with these businesses are "business heroes."
