The big news of the week in the tech industry was that the Department of Justice would be looking into the exclusive deals AT&T and Verizon have with smartphone manufacturers to determine whether they promote an anti-competitive market for smaller telecom companies.
It does make me wonder where the heck the Department of Justice has been during the last few years if they are worried about exclusive deals killing competition in the marketplace. After all, EA pretty much killed the competition when the entered into an exclusive arrangement with the NFLPA. No NFL 2K10 here -- it is all Madden all the time.
Not that I have anything against Madden 10. I think it is going to be the best in the series since making the jump to the current generation of consoles.
But competition makes all of the games better. And if the Department of Justice wants to take a look at how these exclusive deals adversely effect the market *and* the consumers, there's no better example than EA's lock on NFL football.
