Everything you always wanted to know about EA Sports Madden 10 but were afraid to ask because you didn't want Troy Polamalu to smack you in the face.
The emphasis in Madden 10 is placed squarely on putting everything that is in the game in the game. This translates to creating a more realistic football experience, from expanded stats that will make superstar players be real superstars to injury carts to an adaptive AI that will know when you are calling the same play over and over again.
This includes a re-tooling of the franchise mode as well as the actual game day experience. Franchises will do a better job in signing needed free agents, the draft has been smoothed over and player progression has been improved so that younger player will progress quickly if they play well, veteran players will progress but not by leaps and bounds, and older players will digress much faster.
Madden 10 - New Features
QB Improvements. The first thing many players will notice is the number of improvements made to the QB position. Not only is the QB play made more accurate because of a more natural pocket forming around them, but the stats themselves have gone through an overhaul, with QB Accuracy now being divided into short, medium and long accuracy in addition to throw on the run and play action stats to govern those actions. Quarterbacks have also become a bit tougher, now able to throw even when being hit, though sometimes you might wish you just took the sack.
Adaptive AI. My biggest gripe with football games on the console is the -- for lack of a better way of putting it -- utter stupidity of the opposing AI. It's not too difficult to track what is being called, when it is being called, and make your own play selections based on it. Finally, we'll begin seeing some of this in Madden. Adaptive AI will also give a slight boost to the AI of the computer-controlled players when they suspect a certain play being called.
Expanded Stats. If your favorite player has dropped by 10 or even 20 overall points, don't worry, it's all part of the new expanded stats system. The new system gives many of the stats a greater range, so while Madden 9 had a receivers with a route running stat ranging from 62-99, Madden 10 will have range between 35-99. Ultimately, this will allow there to be a bigger difference between backups and starters, and between starters and superstars.
Better AI Play Selection. Did you ever play the Vikings last year and watch them abandon the run for the pass pretty early in the game just because they were down by a little? This shouldn't happen in Madden 10. Teams should now have a much better play selection that goes in line with the strengths of their team. And, should the Vikings draft a top QB and pick up Anquan Boldin in free agency, the AI should adapt, realizing that the strength has moved towards the passing game.
Wildcat Formation. For those hoping to run a bit of the wildcat, it has made it into the game, and Miami won't be the only team running it -- though they'll likely have the biggest variety of plays coming out of the wildcat formation.
