Wii MotionPlus
Is the Wii MotionPlus
a Wii savior?

More than any other console, the Nintendo Wii sales rack is filled with junk titles from smaller developers trying to pump out cheap titles to larger developers doing quick ports to everyone and their mother developing a mini-game extravaganza.

What the Nintendo Wii has way too few of are good games.

The Wii MotionPlus promises to change the landscape of the Wii by providing enhanced sensitivity for the Wii Remote. Essentially, it delivers on the original promise of the Wii as an innovative source for gaming. And it works. Grand Slam Tennis is a fine example of how the Wii MotionPlus can really enhance games.

But Grand Slam Tennis is also a great example of how the Wii MotionPlus is less important than having developers actually deliver good games that utilize the Wii's innovative controls. Because, let's face it, the game is also a lot of fun even without the MotionPlus.

Where was this type of game two years ago?

The Nintendo Wii is closing in on its third year, and Wii Sports is still one of its best titles. This was a game mainly meant as an example of what cool gaming can be on the Wii, and yet game after game has failed to live up to its potential. There have been some bright spots such as Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and, most recently, Mad World, but these titles have been too few and too far between considering how many titles have been dumped onto the Wii.

Why has it taken this long to take Wii Sports Tennis and thrust it into its own spotlight? Why has every bowling game fallen far short of Wii Sports Bowling? And Baseball? It might be the weakest part of Wii Sports, and yet it is still better than MLB 2K8.

I don't expect Madden 10 to be great on the Wii. There are games that are simply meant for a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

But will the Wii MotionPlus really make a difference if developers aren't listening? Let's just hope that Wii Sports Resort does a better job of opening eyes than Wii Sports.
