The Dune MMO would kick serious butt.
He doesn't get the glowing blue eyes
until level 40.

The best IPs for MMOs

Look, just over there, right around the corner... it's another fantasy based MMO! Personally, I love the traditional fantasy setting, but there is so much more that can be done with the MMO genre. We really are just scratching the surface.

Unfortunately, more often than not, when MMOs tiptoe out of the fantasy they produce real stinkers with MMOs like Tabula Rasa not lasting very long. Of course, sticking with elves and dwarves won't always get it done either. Heck, Age of Conan shows that booting elves and dwarves isn't enough either!

So what would make a great MMO? Here are ten settings based on various IPs (intellectual properties) that would create awesome virtual worlds:

10. Dune

Why aren't more games based on Dune? It's amazing, really, because Dune had it all: political intrigue, spaceships, magic and great lines like "Father, the sleeper has awoken!"

But, other than putting down the blueprint to how to make a modern real-time strategy game, they haven't done much with this great piece of intellectual property. But I'm sure there are legions of people foaming at the mouth over the idea of a Dune MMO.

9. Fallout

Now this one I have expect to be announced any day now. It's been the source of recent rumors, and Bethesda has no doubt been keeping their eye on the MMO market. But, until it becomes official, it's going to be on this list.

A post-apocalyptic MMO with a sense of humor, the Fallout MMO would certainly be a nice change of venue from the standard orc and elf fare.

8. Louis L'Amour

Okay, he's an author rather than an intellectual property, but he happens to be the Stephen King of westerns. And why aren't there more computer games based on the wild west? It seems such a natural setting with action, adventure, guns and whores. What more do you need?

Unfortunately, other than a title every year or two, the wild west hasn't been a popular setting for games. There have been a few pen-and-paper games like the GURPs Old West, so there is a starting point for expanding into the MMO realm.

7. Murder, Inc.

Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel and Meyer Lansky led this group of 'enforcers' for the mob, and they later became the subject of a popular movie from 1960.

With the popularity of the Godfather games and Grand Theft Auto, it would seem that something in the territory of gangsters would make for a wonderful virtual world. Okay, I wouldn't want to live there, but it would be fun to play. I went with Murder, Inc. over Grand Theft Auto "the MMO" simply because the 20s and 30s seemed like a funner setting than modern times.

6. Terminator

Terminator Robots vs Humans spells kick butt Teams PvP.
The T-101 is soloable, while the
T-1000 requires a full group.

I'm not just talking about the war-ravaged futuristic Terminator that is the subject of Terminator: Salvation. My vision of Terminator the MMO puts the futuristic war-ravaged world as the "base" of the game and where much of the action will be played out, but there's no need to limit it just to the futuristic war of man verses robot. After all, who doesn't want to jump back to 1985 and catch a showing of Back to the Future before going up against a T-101?

And the best part? You can choose to play on the side of the robots for some good old-fashions PvP "hey don't you corpse camp me you stinking robot!" fun.
