We're quickly closing in on the release of Dragon Age: Origins, perhaps the most highly-anticipated RPG title of the year, and it is hard not to wonder if it's also going to be the biggest bust of the year. But if early reviews are to be believed, the mad geniuses at work at Bioware have done it again, producing a game that may re-invent as much as re-invigorate the RPG genre.
Dragon Age: Origins set out to bring story-based role-playing to the forefront, and according to Eurogamer, they've done just that. In fact, you could spend several hours playing out the origins of your character, popping into the occassional combat, but spending as much time wading through dialogue as the story unfolds. "As an RPG, it's engrossing, easy to grasp, and moulds itself to how you want to play it."
The reviewer for PC Gamer UK gushes that its the most engrossing and detailed game world he's experienced, noting that it took him over 80 hours to get through the game. 80 hours! That might be 10 times the length of time it took to get through Star Wars: The Force Unleashed *IF* you took your time and goofed off a lot while masquerading as Darth Vader's apprentice.
Game Informer has given Dragon Age:Origins a 9/10, stating, "Even more than Mass Effect, the nation of Ferelden feels like a fully realized setting with its own history, conflicts, and power groups. This is one of the main reasons the game is so addicting; completing quests isn't just about grinding experience and amassing loot -- it actually feels like you have an impact on the world."
It certainly looking like we won't be disappointed once the game is released. As an added treat, if you are online while you play (and have a Bioware account), your accomplishments will be recorded to Bioware's new social networking site.
