PlayStation Home is Sony's answer to the Xbox Live 'New Experience' released last month. Taking the idea of player avatars one step further, PlayStation Home invites players into a full-fledged virtual world where they can hang out with other players, chat about games, hang out in virtual shopping malls and clubs, play social games, and eventually watch videos, purchase music, and much more.
The service arrives in open beta today and will be free of charge for anyone who has their PlayStation hooked up to the web. In the future, Sony may monetize PlayStation Home with advertisements, microtransactions and ecommerce, but first they want to see how people use the system.
Considering how much time and effort MMO players put into their in-game housing, how much time millions of people have sunk into the Sims franchise, and the success of virtual worlds like Second Life, Sony could be onto something really big here. A virtual world where you can sit around and watch videos from Hulu, shop for stuff from Amazon, spruce up your virtual living room with cool pixel configurations, and most importantly, meet up with people and go kill them in the latest World War II FPS, is bound to be a big hit if done right.
