Now that the Wii Fit is soaring up the charts as one of the most popular games for the Nintendo Wii, it seems everyone wants in on the action. While Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2009 failed to deliver a solid gamercising experience, that will not deter others for trying to ride the Wii Fit's momentum.
EA Sports has decided to get into the act by dissing the Wii Fit's balance board in favor of using the traditional Nintendo Wii controls. EA Sports Active will include a strap on pouch used to hold the Wii controllers so that different parts of the body can be targeted.
Peter Moore, president of EA Sports, explains how EA Sports Active has a different focus from the Wii Fit. "Wii Fit, its not really a western style philosophy of cardiovascular exercise," said Moore. "You've got more of a classic eastern style of balance and coordination."
Of course, this begs the question of whether or not Peter Moore has actually played Wii Fit. Certainly, yoga can be considered an eastern style of exercise, but has Moore been outside in the last twenty years? I have a half-dozen yoga spots within a few miles of my house. It's not like yoga is some eastern secret! In fact, in aiming Wii Sports Active at women, he's aiming it at a group that often uses yoga as a primary form of exercise.
In addition to yoga, the Wii Fit offers strength training like pushups and plank exercises; aerobics like step exercises, boxing, running and hula-hoop; and balance exercises that include tightrope walking and repelling vicious soccer balls with your head.
Not exactly what I would call mired in eastern philosophy.
Ignoring that bit of misinformation, EA Sports Active is an intriguing title. While it is disappointing that it doesn't seem to offer support for the balance board, it could be a great alternative to those who don't want to shell out more money for the Wii Fit and Balance Board. And it could also be a great addition for Wii Fit owners. After all, it is best to alternate between different exercises, and EA Sports Active can be used in conjunction with the Wii Fit to ensure that you aren't doing the same thing every day.
