It's been a busy week for Nintendo. After announcing the Nintendo DSi, an upgrade to the popular Nintendo DS that includes bigger screens and a camera among other upgrades, and announcing the long-awaited storage solution for the Wii, the Internet is buzzing about an upgraded Nintendo Wii due out in 2011.
Labeled the Wii HD, this upgraded console is expected to have improved graphics and storage capacity as well as being 100% backwards compatible with the Wii.
But will Nintendo try to take on Microsoft and Sony by delivering a machine that can rival the Xbox 360 and PS3 in graphics and power? The beauty of the Wii is that it doesn't try to compete directly with the more powerful consoles, but along with capturing the casual gamer market, it's also gained ground with hardcore gamers who have chosen to supplement their more powerful consoles with a Wii.
So, it might make sense to beef up the Wii and delve deeper into the hardcore market. The key will be keeping the price low enough for casual gamers while upping the graphics and processing power. It's doubtful the Wii HD will go all out -- it will likely still drag behind offerings from Sony and Microsoft -- but a bump in power will keep it a nice addition for the hardcore gamer and casual gamer alike.
