The good news for Wii owners is that the disappointment of a scaled-down version of Rock Band will not be repeated with Rock Band 2 for the Wii. Harmonix has promised that the Wii version of the popular music game will be just as fully featured as any other version, and this includes both downloadable content and online play.
In Rock Band 2, Wii users will use Wii Points to purchase songs. But where will they be stored? The Wii only comes with 512 MB of flash memory, which won't store very many songs and is also used for game saves and virtual console games. The answer: an SD card that can be connected to the Wii. While you cannot store full Wii games on an SD card, Rock Band 2 will be able to read the SD card and use it for downloadable content.
Rock Band 2 will also be able to access the marketplace, so you can download new songs while in the game. However, you won't be able to buy Wii points while in the game, so you will need to purchase them before booting up Rock Band 2.
For online play, Rock Band 2 will use the Wii's friend codes for hooking up with other people. This is a little disappointing because the Nintendo Wii is severely lacking in user-friendly online gameplay. It was hoped there would be a better system in place, but at least Wii users will have the ability to hook up online.
As for using your guitar with both Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour, we'll have to wait and see. Right now, Harmonix can only confirm that the guitar from Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock will work in Rock Band 2.
