Overheard conversation at the fitness complex hot-tub: "My kids don't go anywhere without me or their father!" and "It's a terrible world out there!" and "Yeah, you can't even trust the teachers these days!"

It's true, there are terrible people in the world but there must be someway our children and grandchildren can enjoy their chlidhood without paranoia setting in.

Many people remember their childhoods as a time of exploration and learning. They were allowed to wander the neigborhood unfettered by chaperones and as long as they came home for dinner, no one went into panic mode. Of course, those days included some bad experiences for some children.

In  my own family there were close calls. One was a stranger trying to abduct a pre-teen. She was clever enough to listen to her inner voice and knew that his invitation for donuts was not quite "right." She went straight home and told her mother, who had police watch out for her when school let out the next few weeks. She had unwittingly told the man what school she attended.

She had been the one who had roamed the farthest at a very early age. The one who was often caught being "naughty", the one her mother worried about most. Perhaps because of that worry, her mother had armed her with warning signs to look for when meeting new people. Her mother also pointed out the things to look for that tell you a person is trustworthy and she taught the girl to be trustworthy.

    * Listen to your children. If they have fears, listen very closely.

     * Introduce them to good people and tell them what is good about them.

     * Make sure they are physically fit enough to run and confident enough to fight.

     * Arm them with information on how and where to get help if they are in danger.

     * Set rules and curfews. Know where they are going and make sure they understand WHY you need to know and why the rules are needed.

It's normal to worry about our children, but without the freedom to explore and grow, they cannot thrive.
