Tony Stewart spins out leader in route to victory in Ft. Wayne

Tony Stewart won his third consecutive ‘Rumble in Fort Wayne’ in Fort Wayne Indiana Friday night. But the win didn’t come without a bit of on track bumping from the two time NASCAR champions that sent the leader spinning and gave Stewart the lead.

Stewart took the top spot with 21 laps to go in the 60-lap feature by shoving leader Lou Cicconi Jr going into turn four and sending him spinning.

Cicconi had taken the lead from pole sitter Dave Darland after Darland crashed into Mike Fedorcak.

Stewart held onto the lead to score the victory. Cicconi continued the race but dropped out before the finish with engine trouble.

“It was my fault for screwing Lou up,” Stewart told the Fort Wayne News Sentinel after the race. “I wanted to get into him, but not that much. I made that mistake, so this was probably Lou’s win. I kind of stole it away from him there.

“I wasn’t trying to screw him up,” Stewart added. “I wanted him to know that I was putting the pressure on him to try to get him to make a mistake. I just got into him too hard.”

For his part Cicconi was able to smile after it was all over.

“He just hit me and spun me out,” Cicconi said. “It was a hit with love. We’ve been through this a hundred times. It’s no big deal.”

Stewart failed to make the feature after his first heat race but was able to race his way to a starting spot by winning a last chance heat.

Stewart began racing in the annual Fort Wayne event in 1999 and has now won seven feature races including six of the last nine.
