NASCAR will begin testing drivers for performance-enhancing drugs in January under guidelines from a tougher policy that bans not only the use of illegal drugs but also the abuse of prescription medications.
The drivers will most likely be tested during the third week of January. Crew members will be required to submit results from an approved lab by January 16.
A NASCAR memo sent to teams this week lists specific banned substances that crew members must be screened for. No guidelines were issued for drivers, but NASCAR has always reserved the right to test competitors for any substance they want.
The new tougher guidelines were first announced in September. Under the new program everyone is required to be tested before the season begins, with random testing that will continue throughout the season. Prior to the new program, NASCAR had the right to randomly test based on suspicion of abuse.
NASCAR had originally planned on testing drivers during the annual preseason testing at Daytona. But because testing has been suspended for 2009, it appears that NASCAR will conduct the screening for drivers when most are in Charlotte for the annual media tour.
