The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation will meet Wednesday to consider the nominations of Charles Bolden for NASA Administrator and Lori Garver for the agency's Deputy Administrator.
"Charles Bolden has the ability to inspire the agency to turn those dreams into reality," said Louis Friedman, executive director of The Planetary Society.
The society urges that the Committee accept their nominations, and that the Senate quickly confirms them so that they can provide NASA with the leadership it needs to guide it through the challenges of the coming decade.
Economic constraints on both NASA and the nation will demand a careful balancing of resources; the retirement of the shuttle will require development of a new launch capability; and sending astronauts to distant worlds, such as Mars, will require a clear course of exploration goals and mileposts.
