Making the Most of Your NY Visit-An insider's guide to adjusting to NY

When New Yorkers venture into the country side or vacation in smaller cities, they slow down. New Yorkers realize that the pace of life outside their frenetic metropolis is slow. In the country, people drive slower, walk leisurely, and even staff in supermarkets, retail stores and restaurants operate at a more languid pace. New Yorkers don’t expect rural people to operate at their quickened pace.

But when tourists visit New York City, most make few adjustments. Most visitors stroll down Broadway, stop and gawk at skyscrapers, and amble at a snail’s pace in a city known for its jack rabbit style. Stop dawdling and keep moving.

Here are some quick tips for tourists to make the most out of their stay in New York:

1) Quicken your pace

You’re visiting New York. Adjust to it. Think faster. Walker speedier. Look in front of you. Keep moving. You’ll benefit by moving so quickly. You’ll lose weight, feel better and accomplish more.

2) Walk the city

You can take your Grey Line tour bus around the city and sit on the upper deck. That’s a good way to get the aerial view of New York. But New York is a walking city. It’s a city that demands observing, seeing, smelling, tasting and experiencing up close and personal. Hence, walk it.

3) Ask questions

Some tourists are stubborn and refuse to speak up. Even with a map trying to find Little West 12th Street in the Meatpacking district is problematic. Most New Yorkers love their city, know it well, and love to answer questions.

4) Take everything in at once

New York is like a jazz serenade. It’s Miles Davis meets Sonny Rollins. It’s a cacophony of sounds, smells, and tastes. Feel free to walk and eat. Most New Yorkers drink coffee while moving, and so should you. Take it all in. New York should surround and envelop you.
