If you read my review of Jennifer's Body, then you were probably able to guess that I'm hyper-critical of horror movies in general. To recap, they're generally boring, predictable and you can see the scares and twists coming from a mile away. Very rare is it that a horror movie actually makes the viewer feel horrified. The last two horror movies that genuinely freaked out this film critic were The Blair Witch Project and The Sixth Sense. Suffice to say, it's been a while. This afternoon, I viewed the teaser trailer for the new film Paranormal Activity and in its brief 1 minute and 46 seconds, I experienced shivers down my spine and felt just a little freaked out. For someone who feels a hefty dose of cynicism towards the horror genre in general, that's pretty remarkable. This movie has actually been floating around the festival circuit for the last couple of years and it wasn't until this year that it landed on Steven Speilberg's desk and he promptly gave it his coveted endorsement. Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks Pictures, the two studios distributing the film, are currently showing Paranormal Activity in select cities across the country and are trying to gauge fan interest before sending the film to more cities. If you don't at least get goosebumps after watching this trailer, you're already dead...
