Working Moms 101: Where can I find back-up child care in Phoenix?
I received the call as I was preparing for my work day, "I'm really sorry Michele, but I'm closing for the week. There's been a family emergency."
My youngest goes to an at-home child care provider in our neighborhood. I love the attention and care he receives from her. Plus, she's amazingly reliable. But she's a working mom, just like me, and sometimes life throws her a curveball that forces her to unexpectedly shut down her business, leaving me scrambling for last-minute child care for my son. The good news is there are options in Phoenix and it helps to know them before your slammed with a last-minute child care crisis.
Here are three of the back-up or emergency child care providers in the Valley:
- Bright Horizons: Bright Horizons was founded in 1986 to serve children, families and employers with employer-sponsored child care, back up care and other work-life solutions. Your employer may offer back up childcare through Bright Horizons as part of your benefits package. Be sure to check with your employer's Human Resources staff. If you do not have access to Bright Horizons through your employer, there are some Valley centers open to the community.
- KidsPark: KidsPark is an hourly, drop-in child care center for children ages two through 12 and offers a safe, fun play space days, evenings and weekends. You don't need reservations, which makes KidsPark a perfect solution for a last-minute child care arrangement.
- SitterCity: SitterCity is an online service that connects parents with caregivers. Sign up for a 7-day trial, or become a member for less than $10 a month. Membership gives you access to their more than 150,000 caregivers around the nation that can help you with child care, pet care, senior care, housekeeping or tutoring. SitterCity also offers employer-sponsored services, so also check with your Human Resources team to find out if you're covered.
Also, some child care centers like Primrose Schools or KinderCare might offer drop in child care on a space available basis. Last minute child care emergencies needn't be stressful with these alternatives available in the Valley. Research your options now and connect with other moms in your workplace or neighborhood to swap information. Then when the time comes, you'll be ready to face your child care emergencies without brso that you'll be ready when the time comes.
