The story of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward is more than just a
Both high caliber actors, they had a marriage that worked well because they cared enough to make it work. They had love and respect for each other as not only as husband and wife but as actors.
Still, their top priority was their love for each other and their family.
The fact that they chose to live far from Tinsletown is a testament to their commitment to live a life that was rich without being phony. They were able to practice their acting craft and still live privately as a couple. Pursuing varied interests on their own, they shared a passion for philanthropy.
No couple stays together for fifty years with out commitment and deep love. That isn’t to say that there were never any disagreements or negative moments. They wouldn’t be human if they never had a fight but the good times outweigh any bad and a relationship where two people have respect and love flourishes and is sustained.
The quote Paul Newman made in reference to why he stayed faithful to Joanne Woodward, is legend.
‘I have steak at home, why go out for hamburger?’ he told Playboy magazine when asked if he was tempted to stray. That is as romantic a statement as any I have ever read.
Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward had as perfect a relationship as any one of us imperfect beings could hope to have. It was beautiful, caring, filled with success, both individually and as a couple, and respect.
If you’re ever looking for an example of a good, solid marriage you need look no further than the one shared for fifty years by Paul and Joanne.
Bless both of you.
Dedicated to Paul Newman, actor, philanthropist, husband, father and one hell of a great guy.
