Ellen DeGeneres and her partner of four years, Portia de Rossi, have made it legal; as legal as any other married couple according to the laws of the State of California. Hopefully theirs is a marriage of not only love but of a meeting of two true minds. I think it is.

I like the words ‘…..a marriage of true minds.’ Taken from Shakespeare’s Sonnet Sixteen, it is a good way to describe a marriage. It means a union where both partners have the same ideas and the same goals together in their life as a couple. It is a union of mutual love and respect for each other, for each one’s individual talents and aspirations; a sharing, caring partnership, a marriage of true minds.

Marriage is one of the most complicated of relationships because it is a legally binding promise made by two people. It is a contract unlike any other. The commitment is not only signed in ink, it is signed with love. Any two people who care enough about each other to enter into this contract deserve our support.

So to Ellen and Portia, I raise my glass and say, “Congratulations! Love and happiness to you! May you always have a marriage of true minds coupled with true hearts!”
