There are three full time mechanics working on the Grand Canyon Railway locomotive 237 rebuild project. . Some of them have gone to school in La Grange, Illinois - where this F40PH locomotive was made - to learn more about how to work on these engines. This project has a pretty quick timeline and the crew is dedicated completely to the project not just “work on it when you are not busy” as the past rebuild projects were completed. They also bring in welders and electricians as needed for specific aspects of the project.
The locomotive is now mostly stripped as you can see in the slideshow pictures. The last of the parts going to outside vendors were sent earlier. The body panels will be replaced and are being removed. The ditch light housings have been mounted on the front. And finally the accessory rack, which houses the oil filters, oil cooler, and radiator water tank, has been completely disassembled and cleaned.
