Bright Angel Trail above Indian Garden (Mike Quinn, NPS)

Yesterday evening, November 9th, Grand Canyon National Park Service rescue personnel responded to a report of a man down on the Bright Angel Trail just below the mile-and-a-half rest stop.  His family reported that they had hiked ahead and when they returned to find him; he was not breathing, unresponsive, and his head was bleeding.

The 911 operator, who took the call, gave family members CPR instructions and when the rescue personnel arrived they took over medical care.  They were unfortunately unable to revive the gentleman and he was declared dead on the scene.

The gentleman has been identified as Joseph Mitchell, a 63 year old from Clarkdale, Arizona.  His body was removed from the canyon this morning via helicopter and was transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner. The National Park Service is conducting an investigation of the death.
