A funny thing happened on the way to posting information about a cool, new Mad Men hotel package offered by The St. Regis New York. The package is no longer available. I spotted it on two websites, Hotel Chatter and UnBeige. And since I can't wait 'til the show makes its third season premiere on AMC August 16, 2009, I thought it was the perfect hotel getaway for rabid fans.
Here's how Hotel Chatter described the package: "The St. Regis New York is now offering an exclusive package in conjunction with the return of the third season of the insanely-popular (and insanely-awesome) AMC TV series Mad Men. Starting on August 16th, every Sunday night when Mad Men airs, you can immerse yourself in the full Mad Men experience — complete with Bloody Marys, 60's-ish food and Bergdorf shopping." The $895 package also included a '60s themed three-course in-room dinner for two, two Bloody Marys, cologne, lipstick and personal shopping at Bergdorf Goodman.

I went to The St. Regis New York's website to find out more about it. Nothing there. I called their main toll-free reservations, not a thing. They referred me to the hotel's in-house reservations, who were unaware of the package. They in turn put me in touch with the hotel's PR person, who said the package had been canceled.
So what happened? Maybe the hotel wasn't authorized to use Mad Men in its packages/promotions. Maybe it was too popular. I don't know, but it's too bad, as it was a fun package. But it's a good reminder to always check the source, even if you read it elsewhere.
One city's fans that will be watching the opening show eagerly are those in Baltimore. The season opener, titled Out of Town, is set in Baltimore and includes such '60s landmarks as the Belvedere Hotel and Haussner's restaurant. Good evening, Baltimore!
The St. Regis New York does offer a number of packages. It's a lovely hotel, and every time I go to New York I make sure to pop into the King Cole Bar and gaze at the Maxfield Parrish mural (above) while enjoying a Manhattan. It's the quintessential New York experience. Photo by Sue Frause.
