Cruisin' with Brandi Carlile, Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, John Hiatt, Emmylou Harris

It's not too early to think about winter getaways. And before you scrunch up your nose when I suggest a cruise, hear me out. There are some pretty cool theme cruises out there, especially the music based ones.

I've been on a number of cruises in the past:  a summer trip to Alaska, a river boat cruise in Oregon and a fabulous winter cruise in Norway.

Last winter I went on my first Caribbean cruise. It was a Cayamo cruise, and thanks to my friend Vic who put it all together, six of us escaped the grey and rain of the Pacific Northwest and flew to Miami. After several fun nights in South Beach, we boarded our Carnival cruise ship.

We were official Cayamo cruisers!

The week-long journey took us to Grand Cayman, where we kayaked; Cozumel, for a day of exploring the Mayan ruins; and Jamaica, for a lazy float down the White River on inner tubes followed by a late lunch of jerk chicken and Red Stripe beer.

Back on board, it was all about the music. Performing during the week were Brandi Carlile, Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, John Hiatt, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller and more. The venues are indoors and outdoors, large and small. Plus, you'll be hangin' out with the artists, who for the most part were friendly and accessible. Emmylou Harris even brought her mom!

This year's cruise is February 28-March 7, 2009. The itinerary includes Samana, St. Thomas, Tortola and Great Stirrup Cay. And the musical menu is not only all the artists listed above, but also Kathleen Edwards, the Indigo Girls, Marc Broussard, Joe Ely and many more.

Or you could just stay home and listen to them in the rain.
