The Great Summer Staycation: Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

August 19, 8:46 AM

Since I'm a travel writer, I travel. Sometimes a lot. It's not a bad gig, but this summer I decided to stay close to home on Whidbey Island. No major airports, no big security lines and no different time zones.

So far, I've stuck to my plan. My adventures have taken me to different areas of the Pacific Northwest: British Columbia (Richmond, Victoria, Courtenay, Sunshine Coast, Quadra Island); Port Townsend; Bellingham and Seattle. This weekend I'm off to Portland.

Oh, there was Oklahoma City, where I attended a conference. But somebody has to check out where the Seattle SuperSonics have defected to. Click here to read a story I wrote for Crosscut about our former basketball team's new home.

My other reason for staying home is the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. I love the Olympics, no matter what the season. And this summer I have a special interest in them, as my husband and I spent three weeks in Asia this spring. Out travels took us to Beijing, Hong Kong and Bali.

It was my first Asian adventure -- but it won't be my last!

For more info:  Pictured above is the newly opened Terminal 3 of the Beijing Capital International Airport. Designed by Norman Foster, it's the largest airport building in the world.
