Tasmania: The Movie, gives Australia (the movie) some competition

Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman star in "Australia."

Baz Luhrmann’s epic movie, Australia, opened in theatres across North America last month to not such stellar reviews. Scenery? Yes. Story? No. Notwithstanding the lukewarm reception, Tourism Tasmania is jumping on the Down Under wagon with Tasmania: The Movie.

OK, It's actually a fictitious video, and Tasmania Tourism is taking advantage of Australia the movie by using a little humor and cheeky Aussie wit. It's actually pretty funny. And it came to be because the tourism peeps weren't too happy that the island state of Tasmania was left off the map in promotional movie posters for Australia. C'mon mates, it's part of OZ!

Even though Tasmania is a small island, it has a big story to tell. And the video features teasers and trailers along with Tasmanian vacation ideas that echo the island themes of transformation and adventure against the island's iconic landscapes.

Lonely Planet, Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveller have all consistently ranked Tasmania as a prime vacation destination -- based on its purity, wilderness and culinary delights. Tourism officials say those features are "in stark contrast to the landscapes and dusty drama of Australia."

Other OZ Movies: Dying Breed, a cannibal film about Tasmania, was filmed in Tasmania. Released on Nov. 6, 2008 Tasmanian tourism officials are hoping the film will attract tourists to the island.
