Even eagles need a push!

The eagle need to push their young ones off the edge to begin flying.  Without that gentle push, the young ones would never fulfill their destiny to soar high in the sky. We humans also need a push once in a while.

In high school, a teacher ridiculed me in class.  Until that time, I was shy, but from that moment on, I became a prime example of an introvert and I carried that humiliation with me -- like a ball and chain , for more than 30 years -- I was successful, but not like I would have been if I had taken another incident with me that happened in high school.

Not only was I shy, but I was tall and skinny -- very much nonathletic.  In my sophomore or junior year, the entire P.E. class had to climb a 10-ft wall and over onto the balcony.  After a month, in Oct., 27 out of 30 had climbed that wall.  I was one of the 3 remaining.  One other boy climbed the wall the next month.  There were two remaining. A rather short and overweight boy who could never climb that wall, and me.  Months past, but I still couldn't climb that wall.  Near the end of May, it was my turn to climb that wall (and fail) again. Then, I glanced behind me and a beautiful looking senior girl began approaching the P.E. teacher to hand him a note.  As she approached the teacher, I started my nth attempt to climb the wall.

Understand, I didn't consciously think of the girl, except thinking, "All my God, I'm going to fail in front of a beautiful girl." However, my subconscious mind must have been saying "I can't fail in front of a girl."  To my amazement, I climbed that wall faster and better than Spiderman.  And from that time forward, I climbed that wall with ease.

Two things.  We all need a push at one time or the other.  Since I am a chemist by education, I simply consider the push, a catalyst.  Something that doesn't affect or change the other person, but one that can change the life of another.  Unfortunately, I didn't understand this lesson in life until years later -- after I stopped being an introvert.

The second thing is that the subconscious mind is truly all powerful.  Years ago, I really never understood the concept of positive thinking.  I just considered it a whole bunch of gobbledygook, but now I speak on and coach others on the Law of Attraction. It's a very simple concept which I believe Abraham Lincoln says it the best, "You are what you think."  I didn't have much, if any, belief in myself.  That's why I wrapped myself in the sandwich of that incident where I was ridiculed by my English teacher.

I have a dear friend of mine who will be competing for the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking this Saturday.  In his speech he mentions that we can control our lives or let circumstances do it for us.For nearly 35 years, I allowed that one incident to control my life.  If only I understood the meaning of what happened to me in the P.E. class, I would have controlled my life.

What about you?  Are you willing to be pushed out of the nest (our comfort zone) every now and again?  Are you willing to shed the negative thoughts and replace them with positive thoughts?  Are you ready to help others to do the same?  Whatever you decide, remember not only the eagles need a push.  We also need one once in a while.
