The latest jurisdiction to legalize same-sex marriage? It's the Coquille Indian Tribe, of Oregon.

With recognition presumably available only to the 200-300 members of the tribe, the move probably won't have much impact beyond the scheduled nuptials of Jeni and Kitzen Branting, but it's still an important sign that the barriers to granting legal equality to same-sex relationships are falling.

Of course, we might entirely bypass the battle over what constitutes a "real" marriage if we returned to treating marriage as a private matter, with no role for the state in defining or regulating relationships. Then we could each get married in our own way, with people who love us -- and not worry about the neighbors' preferences.
