Eight ways to reduce your energy consumption in Chicago summers
Original Chicago bungalow or home technology showplace, it doesn't matter what kind of home you have, you can use vintage technology or modern technology to reduce your carbon footprint and moderate your energy consumption. Here are eight easy, affordable ways to low-tech your house and manage your home cooling better.
- Have dinner outdoors, try cold foods, no cooking required, and check out misting fans, sold at many home centers and discount marts to create a chill breeze for outdoor entertaining.
- Entertain outdoors - people generate heat and a large party can quickly raise the room temperature or house temperature substantially.
- Houses with awnings are easier to cool - see what's new in awnings.
- Add a covered porch for entertaining and to reduce solar absorbtion in the summer. South and west sides are best. (porch-related Chicago building codes)
- Placing windows strategically can reduce energy consumption. Catch a breeze. Take advantage of shady exposures. Make new windows face each other for cross ventillation.
- Consider anti UV film on windows that face east or south.
- Plant a tree or install a trellis to shade windows that get a lot of sun.
- Add insullating Window shades, blinds and draperies for privacy and a cool-off from the hot afternoon glare.
- Try an inexpensive box fan near your bedroom window if the night is moderate instead of cranking the AC as soon as the temp rises above 60 outside. Moving air feels cooler. If it isn't hot and humid outdoors, the fan should get you through the night.
Need sources? There's a terrific website called The City of Chicago. It's a directory of local vendors for everything under the sun!
