I have a vaguely unhealthy affection for Star Trek. I had a button on my jean jacket in high school that, when pressed, emitted the Next Gen communicator beedeebee noise. Also, after the most recent movie opened, I purchased a box of Frosted Flakes in order to get the Star Fleet Command doohickey.
If anyone would like a Klingon Command doohickey, give me a holler. Note to Tony the Tiger: There were no Klingons in the freaking movie, jerk.
At any rate, I love Star Trek, and can't wait to try Star Trek Online.
This dev chat was super fun.
Awesome quotes:
"Fuel management isn't something that we're excited about as a gameplay mechanic. Would rather be able to design slightly unpredictable content - spring a huge Borg cube on you when you least expect it - and not have you run out of gas. : )"
(That apparently enraged some particularly hopeless ST nerds in the audience, but the official response makes tons of sense from a development and a normal player's perspective. And no offense to hopeless ST nerds intended, considering I own the Nitpicker's Guide to ST:TNG... both volumes.)
"Although we're in space - it's also a video game, and that comes with certain limitations."
"No warp in combat. Combat in STO takes place at subwarp speeds. I know that combat takes place in warp sometimes in the shows and movies - we wanted to be able to give you a sense of place and positioning in combat, I can only theoretically imagine what combat at warp would LOOK like."
(The dev clarified that if you run far enough away from where you're fighting, you can jump to warp.)
Read the whole thing, it's worthwhile!
