"...two parts Goya, one part comics, three parts animation, two parts graffiti, half a part Hopper, 2 Parts Ralph Steadmann, with a dash of Pollock, topped with a Carlin/ Public Enemy Sauce."
---excerpt from Sean Boyles' biography
Bay area artist Sean Boyles, whose work is currently on view at Giant Robot SF with the other "inbeciles" (Joe To, Rob Sato, Ako Castuera, and Ryohei Tanaka) sheds some light on what he thinks about when he creates work, his favorite things, and main food groups. Though the inspiration behind Sean's drippy, smeary, spontaneous and brooding work can not be narrowly defined by his taste in music, comics, food, ugly things and awkward situations, it is interesting to take these figments of Sean Boyles' mindset into consideration when viewing his mixed media work and paintings at GR. Sean Boyles' work is exciting because of the way he leaves his mark and allows it to create a layered and complex surface that speaks to the artist's process and movement.

1) What inspires your work?
ugly humans, mad humans, dumb humans, goofy humans, abnormal humans, awkward situations, eerie situations, absurd situations...zombies, vampires, and robots. i guess movies and comic books too.
2) How did you guys decide upon the title of the show?
it was a group effort. everyone suggested names and we all voted. ryohei came up with the title, and initialy mispelled it, probably on accident, and we all thought it was funnier that way.
3) Why the intentional misspelling of "exist" and what is meant by "art of imbeciles?" How does this concept work with the pieces you have in the show?
the excist title was actually an after thought. our work wasn't made with the title for the show in mind. i voted for the name, because it sounded the funniest.
4) What are you currently working on/ future projects? i'm making more paintings, and prints. printing some hyphy tall tees. i'm going to paint another mural soon. i'm in a show called "street dreams", out in syracuse that opens the day after "excist" comes down. and i'm just finishing up teaching printmaking, for the summer quarter at Santa Clara University (Editor's note: I was fortunate enough to have Sean as my instructor for a few of my painting classes while I was a studio major :-) ).

5) favorite movie, book, food, music, artist(s).
movies: ghostbusters, goonies, for a few dollars more, idiocracy, mad max: road warrior, the sword of doom, and raising arizona
books: sketchbooks
food: tacos, pho, adobo, noodle dishes in general, chocolate malted crunch ice cream, and hawaiian punch slurpies.
music: tech n9ne, aesop rock, michael jackson, mindless self indulgence, and the shapeshifters, the roots
artists: besides my friends, not too many current people...i like Hung Liu...i think for the most part i like artists who are dead, maybe some who are about to die too.
