Game Over: Art of the Gamer Generation @ Giant Robot
Many of us, particularly those hailing from Gen X or Gen Y (yup, there is a Gen Y now...according to Wikipedia...the not-so-authoritative-but-great-for-killing-boredom website), grew up with video games. We are the generation(s) that saw video games evolve from the Atari arcade games of the 70's and 80's, to the explosion of home consoles, portable consoles, PC Games, MMORPG's, and Nintendo Wii. For most of us, video games has become a part of our cultural consciousness and has no doubt made an impression upon young artists today.
The Giant Robot show Game Over features work inspired by video games from a large sampling of GR artists, including the "Inbeciles" of the Excist (sic) back in September. Exhibiting artists include:

Video games have been making headlines for years due to its controversy, innovation, and penetrating pop cultural presence. Lately, old school games by Atari and Nintendo have become quite hip and are attracting a following of revivalists. In addition, new media artists are looking back to the old-school pixelated aesthetic as the conceptual basis for contemporary work (Pixel Art). This will be a hot show for video game fans and definitely nostalgic for people who came of age in the early, burgeoning years of video games.
GO TO THE Reception: Saturday October 11 @ Giant Robot SF (618 Shrader St, off of Haight). 6:30-10 PM.
