A Victorian "penny dreadful" novel. Photo from Wikipedia.

Which came first: the bite or the vampire. Definitely Varney the Vampire was one of the first bloodsuckers on the scene.

Thanks to reader VilaWolf (see comments to my "Vampire Byte #2") and our Lexington Kentucky Vampire Examiner, I now realize that there is more to vampire history than Eastern European myths, Bram Stoker's Dracula, and the German Nosferatu movies.

You can read the Victorian "penny dreadful" novels about Sir Francis Varney, the  vampire, in etexts at the University of Virginia Library.

Nosferatu means "creature of the night" and can encompass werewolves, demons, and zombies as well as vampires.
