Cheerful things are happening despite the economy. The same day this month that the City of Aurora closed the smallest branch of its public library, it reversed that decision.
Chambers Plaza Library closed on April 6. But Aurora City Council voted that day to have the city’s budget staff locate funds—possibly from the city’s reserve fund—to re-open the library with limited hours and staffing.
Located in the Chambers Plaza strip mall at 15057 E. Colfax Ave, it reopened April 16 with operating hours from 2 to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.
As of April 6, Aurora also instituted cuts in schedules at six other libraries. These changes have remained in place. The schedule changes are as follows:
• Central Library—closed on Friday;
• Hoffman Heights Library—closed Sunday, Monday, and Thursday;
• Iliff Square Library—closed Sunday, Monday, and Thursday;
• Martin Luther King, Jr., Library—closed Sunday, Monday, and Friday;
• Mission Viejo Library—closed Sunday and Monday;
• Tallyn’s Reach Library—Closed Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.
According to an Aurora Public Library (APL) spokesperson, the cuts are part of about $19.6 million that the city has trimmed from its budget since 2002. APL attributes the cuts to “the weak economy and continued budget shortfalls.”
