“A Chinese man sticking needles in me is not going to calm me down!” “Well put on some lipstick and kiss my ass!” Flawlessly delivered lines like this were aplenty in the Southern California premiere of Tuna Does Vegas at the press opening on Saturday, April 18, much to the delight of the audience. Virtuoso actors Joe Sears and Jaston Williams are back in the first new “Tuna” show in 10 years for a limited run at La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. So if you want a boat load of belly laughs don’t delay!

Big Bertha Bunmiller and gun-lovin’ talk show host Arles Struvie decide to renew their wedding vows Vegas style. But a slip of his tongue while on air alerts other Tuna townies who decided a trip to Sin City is just what they need. Included in the entourage are Pete Fisk from the Greater Tuna Humane Society, Inita and Helen from the Tastee Kreme, dieting Joe Bob, Vera and Pearl . . . and merriment ensues. One of many highlights is when double-booked Elvis impersonators (sequined white pantsuit era vs. Blue Hawaii period) duel it out using song titles as swords.

Consummate performers Sears and Williams play all the kooky characters, seamlessly making exits and entrances. An army of skillful dressers backstage must be busy helping with the considerable costume changes. The actors/playwrights have honed their craft since Greater Tuna premiered off-Broadway in 1982. For 22 years they have toured with the Tuna Trilogy (Greater Tuna, A Tuna Christmas and Red, White and Tuna).

Co-written by director Ed Howard Tuna Does Vegas has assembled an award-winning design team: set design by Christopher McCollum, lighting design by David Nancarrow, delightful costume design by Linda Fisher and sound design by Ken Huncovsky. Bravo!

Tuna Goes Vegas will perform 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 8 p.m. Friday; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday; and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday through May 3. Tickets are $40 and $48 and can be purchased at La Mirada Theatre’s website, www.lamiradatheatre.com. Student, Senior, Children and group discounts are available.
