A Rasmussen poll released today shows Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum comfortably ahead of Democrat Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink in the race for the Florida governorship. According to Rasmussen, Republican candidate McCollum leads Sink by 11 points, garnering 46% of respondents, against Sink’s 35%. McCollum receives 75% of Republican votes and, more importantly, has a 21 point lead among independent voters. Conversely, Sink receives support from only 65% of Democrats. McCollum’s favorable/unfavorable ratio is 53 to 30, while Sink’s is a weaker 39 to 34. Sink’s numbers are not being helped by the general attitudes of Floridians towards the Democrats. President Obama’s approval rating in the state is a dismal 42%, a huge drop within a year for a president who won the state in 2008.
At the same time, the Republican Party of Florida put out a release critical of the Democratic candidate. A You Tube video highlighted Sink’s concern with counting paper clips and pens and lack of interest in more important issues affecting the people of the state. The release stated in part:
“With Florida’s unemployment rate approaching 12 percent, we need to have a real plan for creating jobs that doesn’t include just appointing an ‘Office Supply Czar’ and counting rubber bands and mechanical pencils. If Alex Sink wants to run an office supply store, she can start next year. If this is the best ‘Florida Democrats’ have to offer, Alex Sink certainly won’t be running the government of the nation’s fourth largest state.”
