Bicycling is a great form of recreation. It’s relatively inexpensive (very serviceable bikes for less than $1000 and total gear costs in the low $100s), it provides an excellent cardiovascular workout and it can mitigate stress like (almost) nothing else I can think of. Yes, there are downsides – head winds, unsuitable roads, head winds, aggressive drivers, head winds, hostile laws and law enforcers and (did I mention this?) head winds.

Bicycle Colorado is a local advocacy organization created to deal with the downsides. They don’t claim to be working on the head winds problem (I have some thoughts about this that I’ll share in a future column), but they are keenly aware of and actively working on many of the other major bummers that affect each of us individually and that conspire to keep others from taking up our brilliant sport.

Why should you care? Because we need to stick together, to organize and to campaign for cyclists rights in a consistent, positive and non-confrontational way. In the past, Bicycle Colorado has worked with the State Patrol to overturn their arbitrary limit on the size of bicycling events and they have negotiated with the sheriff in Larimer County to try to get him to rethink his misinterpretation of state laws. The organization has helped gain hundreds of miles of new shoulders on state roads as well as successfully lobbying the state legislature to change the side-by-side riding law and pass a more cyclist-friendly right hand turn signal law.

So if you’re like the old me, you’re probably saying to yourself, “It’s great that there’s an organization out there looking out for my welfare, but I’m too busy to actually do anything to help out, so I’ll just remain anonymous and let them take care of me.” That won’t get us where we need to be. You can help immensely by just joining Bicycle Colorado. Take it from me; you do not have to do ANYTHING else. But just by virtue of being a member, you help the organization financially (and it will only set you back $30.00), plus you help lend gravity and moral support to the staff members who are representing the interests of all cyclists at the state house, local government offices and all points in between.

Joining Bicycle Colorado today is the easiest thing you can do to help protect your right and privilege to ride your bicycle in Colorado.
