Mirrors - light and safe but very dorky!

We’ve all seen them - riders who wear mirrors clipped on their glasses, or pasted onto their helmets or who have them sticking off the end of their handlebars. Two things go through our minds when we see these types: 1. I wonder if those things work? and 2. How dorky looking!

So I thought I’d take just a few minutes of your time to discuss the pros and cons of mirrors for road bicyclists.

Let’s start with the cons:

1. They cost money, sometimes as much as $15.
2. They look dorky.

Now the pros:

1. They allow you to see what’s happening behind at all times, thereby potentially saving you from serious injury or even death.
2. Because you can see what’s going on behind you, it’s much easier to be considerate and aware of other riders, thereby potentially saving them from serious injury or death.
3. Because you can see what’s going on behind you at all times, it’s much easier to be considerate of motorists, possibly making them less prone to take out their aggressions on other hapless cyclists in the future and thereby potentially saving many other cyclists from serious injury or death.

When you lay things out rationally like this, weighing the pros and cons of each side of an argument, it’s much easier to make the right decision. Looking at the table above, it’s clear to see what the right answer is: mirrors look dorky and cyclists are therefore well served to ignore common sense and continue to risk themselves and their fellow cyclists in order to look cool.

Next week I’ll explain how dorky helmets look.
