In most areas of life, getting a good start counts for a lot. In sailboat racing a good start can capture an early lead that's tough for contenders to overcome.
"We had to ask the Racing Committee for more room," Sandy LaCivita recalled when asked how the Adrenalin crew pulled ahead of Wish at the beginning of the race.
With Wish instructed to drop behind it, Adrenalin, the windward vessel, slid between Wish and the east breakwall and then surged out Fairport Harbor's main channel toward the race course.
Rain, light and variable wind (8-10 kts) and some 3-4 foot rollers were the conditions for the women's race, which opened the 2009 Grand River Sailing Club-sponsored regatta. Four boats competed.
Cheers to the Adrenalin crew: Betsy Edwards (helm), Erin Fabian (foredeck), Delphine Gabriel (jib), Tina Greenslade (skipper), Jamie Hofrichter (main), Jill Josselson (trim), Sandy LaCivita (running back & main) and Karen McCleod (foredeck). Andrenalin's owner is Kurt Kachler.
