Every Sunday at the Den Lounge in Charles Village a group of poets meet for fellowship, workshops, open mic, and competition. This is SLAMicide, a free-spirited forum for poets to perform and get critiqued. Poets good enough to dominate slam competitions have the privilege of joining the DC/Baltimore national slam poetry team and battle with other teams from around the country.
On Sunday March 8th, 2009 there was no slam competition, but a workshop. DC/Baltimore slam team members Chris August and Twain Dooley hosted the event. The poets at the open critique workshop ranged from the aforementioned slam team members to a gifted college student, an editor for a journal to fans of poetry. The fellowship was free and easy going; the camaraderie between the members sparked a spontaneous run for supplies to create ice cream sundaes. Even those not at the Den for the poetry were drawn into the lyrical tornado: a woman and her friends were there to celebrate her birthday, however Chris August learned of her party, asked a few questions about her, and commissioned the gathered poets to write birthday haiku to be presented to her.
But there was also a workshop to mention. The presence of an editor and more established poets really gave credibility to the workshop aspect of the event. The workshop critiqued two performances and three poems; given helpful insights for everyone involved, not just those whose works were being critiqued. Egos were placed on the back burner as friends and poets helped one another take one step closer to perfecting their craft.
