National Book Festival
Poster: National Book Festival

In just one week, our nation’s backyard will be host to some serious megawatt literary talent at the 9th annual National Book Festival. Authors, poets and novelists galore, giving readings and signing books. Multiple pavilions, stretching 7 blocks on the mall, and just 7 and a half hours to see it all.

It’s enough to make your head spin. There are just too many amazing authors to see! Too many books to get signed! No time to actually do any book shopping!

But this is no time to panic. You’ll miss all the good stuff. Just take a deep breath, take a look at the schedule and pavilion map, and make a plan—like this one:

8am or earlier, depending on where you live
Get on the metro and get your booty downtown. Give yourself time to beat the rush, get a cup of coffee, and get to the gates.

10am
Get situated at the Fiction and Fantasy pavillion to hear best-selling John Grisham talk about the making of legal-thriller magic.

11am
Sit tight and smile to yourself because you already have a seat for super-star Jodi Picoult.

11:30
Take your beloved copy of Are you There God? It’s Me, Margaret to the Judy Blume signing.

12:30
Hit up the food tent for water and snacks. You’ve got a long afternoon ahead of you. Then meander through the Borders Books tent to restock your bookshelves.

2:30
Make your way to the Mysteries and Thrillers pavilion to see local celeb George Pelecanos do his thing.

3:15
Enjoy the scenery as you make your way over to the Poetry and Prose pavilion for Pulitzer Prize winner Marilynn Robinson. Hopefully she’ll share some of her perfectly magical prose.

4:15
Hot step it back to Fiction and Fantasy to see if you can catch a bit of hot young author Colson Whitehead.

4:45
Round out the day with documentary director and Academy nominee Ken Burns in the History and Biography tent.

5:05
Pat yourself on the back for a job well done.
