The 2009 National Poetry Month poster

Have you ever wanted to be able to write a poem? Something other than haiku or a limerick? There's nothing wrong with those forms, but perhaps you're ready to expand your repertoire and have no idea how to start.

Poetry can be a beautiful and sometimes bold way to express your thoughts and feelings, but it can also be an intimidating art form. In a free workshop at the University Branch of the Seattle Public Library, poet, playwright and writer Ann Teplick will teach you how to write a poem.

Full Description:

"In this class we will look to a variety of poets (including Pablo Neruda, William Carlos Williams and Nikki Giovanni) for inspiration, and focus on imagery, sound and rhythm as well as the poem's "voice" to get started in crafting a poem. A variety of in-class writing exercises will help get your creative juices flowing. Light snacks will be served.

Ann Teplick is a poet, playwright and prose writer with an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College. She works with young writers in schools, juvenile detention, psychiatric hospitals, and bereavement groups, plus with various art and literary non-profits."

The class will be held on Monday, April 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. It's a completely free adult class, but you will need to register by calling 206-684-4063.
